You are probably using the octave package from EPEL, as SL does not 
provide octave.  Could you give this a try:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/octave-3.4.3-1.el6

and see if that helps with using the sourceforge repository?

More volunteers are needed to maintain octave packages in Fedora/EPEL as
