In addition to the "regular" development tools like gcc and make, you
will need some additional packages to build SL-6 kernels. For example,

hmaccalc
zlib-devel
binutils-devel
elfutils-libelf-devel

More details on how to build custom kernels, please see:

It should work for SL kernels.
