I think you are correct -- graphics is not the issue.

The real issue is the boot loader and the initrd.  You need to make them 
talk to a USB connected filesystem, and the standard installer probably 
doesn't know how to do that.  For that matter it probably doesn't detect 
the USB drive as an installable hard disk, but I could be wrong.  Try it 
and see what happens.
