Sunil, you have both AFS and multi-homed IP addresses going? I assume
you have pair-bonded network ports and a heavy load on this machine?

Pair-bonding is great for reliability, but it's historically
problematic for load balancing. I wonder if a heavy load, or network
intermittency, is causing flips of a pair-bonded network port and
screwing with your AFS setup. And if you've got AFS or other network
mounts at the "/", such as "/afs" intead of using something a bit
further down your directory tree instead of "/mnt/afs", I can predict
all sorts of adventures.

I had to deal with AFS at MIT, where it was used for public
workstations, and it also historically benefited from weel;u reboots
of the AFS. I could tell stories, but they get complicated

And why in the devil are you accessing cern.ch at all? Is something
trying to descend your afs trees and getting bogged down? (That's
sheer speculation.).
