Have you tried using the hplip drivers from hp? (They're standard with
SL)
I use it for my older hp7140 as well as an old business inkjet 3000 and
it work like a dream.
For Linux comaptible hp printers do a google search for hplip and go to
the hplip site (part of hp) and find the list of supported printers.
