Ha, found it.
In /usr/share/wallpapers/RHEL6/contents/images there is only one link

1920x1200.png -> /usr/share/backgrounds/default.png
so if we add
1280x1024.png -> /usr/share/backgrounds/1280x1024_default.png
2048x1536.png -> /usr/share/backgrounds/2048x1536_default.png
Then it correctly finds various sized backgrounds for KDE, instead of 
just the one widescreen background.

This should be fixed with Beta 2.
