The easient solution may be to go back to a previous version of kernel
(for SL 6.0). The latest kernel (2.6.32-131.2.1.el6) is from EL6.1 and
is indeed built with gcc 4.4.5:

The gcc version in EL6.1 is 4.4.5 but, because gcc is not on the
security update list, it is not yet available for SL6.
