We use ser2net at TRIUMF. I maintain our own version with a patch to
deal with multiple usb-serial adapters (correspondance
between physical devices and /dev/ttyUSBn nodes is quasy-random,
instead of /dev/ttyUSBn names I use USB path names, then grep through
/sys/class/usb tree to find the right ttyUSBn node).

We also use ethernet-serial adapters, but I forgot which brand, we have
not purchased any recently. Note that you have to use them on a private
network or behind individual firewalls (unless newer units have
built-in firewalls).
