FYI -- I've now tracked this problem down to the patch
"linux-2.6-virt-nmi-don-t-print-nmi-stuck-messages-on-guests" [1] and
reported this issue on RHEL's Bugzilla [2].

The comment of the patch begins with "Ok here is a controversial patch" :).
