GRUB is junk - hangs instead of reporting problem ("attempt to boot from LVM partition" in your case),
does not boot from USB stick (boots, unless there is a USB hub connected somewhere, go debug that!),
refuses to boot memtest on large memory machines ("insufficient memory" is the reported error AFAIR),
built-in boot command editor does not edit boot commands (usually editor works fine, unless it is really
important to edit something), the list goes on and on.

In every case of GRUB failure, SYSLINUX/PXELINUX/EXTLINUX worked much better - booted okey
or at least produced useful error messages.
