could you please tell us which graphic card and monior are you using and 
which driver is loaded by X11 (/var/log/Xorg.0.log)?
From where do you know your graphics card supports 1078x700 resolution?
And could you please post the output of "xrandr" or "xrandr --verbose"?
(from a terminal within X)
