As noted above, all you have to do is to update your module-init-tools
from the SL update repository. My system has:

$ rpm -qi module-init-tools
Name : module-init-tools Relocations: (not relocatable)
Version : 3.3 Vendor: Scientific Linux
Release : 0.pre3.1.60.el5_5.1 Build Date: Mon 11 Oct
2010 03:38:54 AM PDT
Install Date: Wed 13 Oct 2010 04:33:30 AM PDT Build Host: norob.fnal.gov
Group : System Environment/Kernel Source RPM:
module-init-tools-3.3-0.pre3.1.60.el5_5.1.src.rpm
Size        : 902493                           License: GPL
Signature   : DSA/SHA1, Tue 12 Oct 2010 11:58:12 AM PDT, Key ID b0b4183f192a7d7d
Summary : Kernel module management utilities.

That is the current version which has the fix.
