The problem was the amount of disk space needed for the upgrade.
To free up the necessary I used "yum" to look for duplicates.
Found 4 copies of OpenOffice and few more.  Moved /usr/java to another disk 
and created a symbolic link.

The upgrade went pretty quick.

Moved the java back to /usr/java.

In a week or so I will repartition the disk and leave a spare G in /usr to 
make future upgrades easy.

There were a lot of opinions and all were on the mark but differed in the 
implementation of a solution.

One thing that would be useful for people with a disk space problem is a list 
of partition sizes.   Am not a real fan of LVM.
