Hi Urs,

I have done the testing as requested using LiveCDs.

(1) SL 5.5 i386 -- same failure as before (udev step). It boots my
Sony laptop fine.
(2) SL 5.5 x86_64 -- same failure as before (udev step).
(3) CentOS 5.5 i386 -- fails but goes a little further. It boots my
Sony laptop fine.
(4) CentOS 5.5 x86_64 -- boots fine.

Each test was done only once, so I cannot speak about the reproducibility.

The motherboard of the failing machine is Asus M2NPV-VM. Its Nvidia
controller is affected by a known bug in RHEL 5.5 (
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586532 ). Not sure if this
is related at all.
