well, /dev/null is an ordinary file in this case, and no longer a character device. This could be caused by any application that unlink()s its output file first, when it's run by root and told to write to /dev/null. Presumably, some test that should be done differently.
Check your scripts (and root's shell history) for occurences of /dev/null. And the content of your shiny new /dev/null file may also give away its creator.
