I've been using a dual "dual core" opteron (dual 285's) machine on a Tyan
s2892 Mobo (K8SE), with an nvidia 6800 GTO card, and MAudio 2496 sound
card.

SL5.4 has run flawlessly, including installing Netbeans, skype_static,
virtualbox with windows, and vlc with the libdvdcss hacks.

I have had this home assembled machine since Xmas 2005. Although it is a
server mobo - it works perfectly fine as a workstation, and I used it for
a while as a research machine at a university in place of the
university-supplied machinery. I have yet to find a reason why I would
want to upgrade it!

I have had just about everything running on the machine at various times,
including Gentoo, Arch Linux, solaris, ... etc ...

I also have SL5.4 running on a friends triple-core phenom running on an
ASUS micro-ATX mobo, with onboard video and sound, without any apparent
issues.
