You don't need to compile them yourself, Red Hat testing kernel binaries 
are available here:

http://people.redhat.com/jwilson/el5/

Kernel -186.el5 shipped as part of RHEL5.5b1.

Alternatively, as Alan Bartlett stated, grab the drivers from ELRepo.
