I seem to have used dag/rpmforge, atrpms and freshrpms more than EPEL.
I have 100+ SL5 machines and find it worth maintaining my own
repo with SL5x plus whatever packages I want from these extra
repos, plus my own packages. Thus I don't actually enable any of
these repos anymore.

I'm not aware of problems between EPEL and SL but there are enough 
incompatibilities (almost always similar but different packages
of the same application) between EPEL and the others that I wouldn't
enable EPEL and any of the others (but I no longer have experience
of whether any of the other combinations would be safe either).
