Hi SciLinux, So I am happily using

$cat /etc/redhat-release
Scientific Linux Fermi LTS release 4.5 (Wilson)

with one annoying "feature" -- at times, the fan goes full blast,
the cpu slows down, and I do

$top
   PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
  5140 root      39  19 11660 8512  512 R 96.6  1.7   5:52.32 prelink
                                          !!!!-constantly in the 90's
this state can last for well over 1/2 hr...
(I have not checked whether this happens at fixed times of day)

What is this prelink business ? do I need it ?
If not, how do I disable this ?
