In tests we found that the sl52 installer kernel happy enough on i7 
desktop machines - but there are i7 specific improvements listed in the 
changelogs of the kernels for sl53 (those are available as security 
updates for sl52 anyway)...

We had more fun the the networking chipsets that happened to be on the 
boards that the maker used and we continue to have cooling problems 
because the maker we bought from seemed to have under-estimated the amount 
heat that would be produced - maybe they didn't expect people to be 
running code flat-out on them...
