I have the same trouble with SL5.2.  We obtain updates from a local
mirror:

ftp://ftp.damtp.cam.ac.uk/pub/linux/scientific/52/i386/updates/security

but
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/52/i386/updates/security
seems to have the same problem.
