Or go by the way of Linux Standard Base -- use lsb_release utility. For
example, in our SL-incarnation for Russian school education named
NauLinux:

$ lsb_release -a
LSB
Version:    :core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:graphics-3.1-ia32:graphics-3.1-noarch Distributor ID: NauLinux
Description:    NauLinux release 5.2 (Boron)
Release:        5.2
Codename:       Boron

Of course, you may choose information fields by other options:

$ lsb_release -r
Release:        5.2
