I should have posted a follow-up.  Yes, iwlagn needs ucode-2.  It is
available from the dag repo.  Installing
iwl4965-firmware-228.57.2.23-1.nodist.rf solves the problem.  This
package contains both -1 and -2.  If you install it *before* the 5.2
to 5.3 update, the 4965 wireless would work seamlessly.  I confirmed
this myself.
