Hi, Michael. As a NIS/flatfiles caveman, I have almost zero direct
experience with this and should probably not open my mouth. But I have
been intrigued by IPA (http://freeipa.org/
http://www.redhat.com/enterprise_ipa/). It integrates FDS/RHDS with
kerberos, and I believe one of the project goals is to provide as much
self-service functionality as possible.

Before IPA hit my radar screen, I was very keen to try FDS. It seems very
compelling relative to openldap; it even includes what seems to be a
for-real, non-afterthought bidirectional active directory sync capability.
I was planning to use FDS to modernize and hopefully consolidate my
trainwreck of NIS, AD and flatfiles, but will now likely try it via its
IPA packaging rather than standalone.
