There seems to be a yum dependency problem between rpm packages
openssl-0.9.7a-43.17 and (newer?) openssl-0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1 in the SL
4.6 yum repositories.

The first package was installed from the SL 4.5 yum repo, but the latter
with the ".el4_6.1" ending seems to be the new naming scheme for the SL
4.6 yum repo.

I manually updated the yum sl-base repo from 4.5 to 4.6. The ran "yum
clean all" and "yum update" before trying to install openssl-devel.

I think I will install openssl-devel from the SL 4.5 distro, and then
try to yum update them to the "el4_6" rpm packages.

We have SL4.6 x86_64 with openssl installed:
[root@gryphon ~]# yum list openssl-devel openssl-*
Loading "kernel-module" plugin
Loading "tsflags" plugin
Loading "changelog" plugin
Loading "dellsysidplugin" plugin
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Installed Packages
openssl.x86_64                           0.9.7a-43.17.1         installed
openssl.i686                             0.9.7a-43.17.1         installed
openssl-perl.x86_64                      0.9.7a-43.17.1         installed
Available Packages
openssl.x86_64                           0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1   sl-base
openssl.i686                             0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1   sl-base
openssl-devel.i386                       0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1   sl-base
openssl-devel.x86_64                     0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1   sl-base
openssl-perl.x86_64                      0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1   sl-base

We tried to install openssl-devel rpm package via yum:
[root@gryphon ~]# yum install openssl-devel
Loading "kernel-module" plugin
Loading "tsflags" plugin
Loading "changelog" plugin
Loading "dellsysidplugin" plugin
Setting up Install Process

Resolving Dependencies
--> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Please wait.
---> Package openssl-devel.x86_64 0:0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1 set to be updated
---> Package openssl-devel.i386 0:0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1 set to be updated
--> Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: openssl = 0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1 for package:
openssl-devel
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Beginning Kernel Module Plugin
Finished Kernel Module Plugin
Error: Missing Dependency: openssl = 0.9.7a-43.17.el4_6.1 is needed by
package openssl-devel

So then I tried to update openssl via yum:
[root@gryphon ~]# yum update openssl
Loading "kernel-module" plugin
Loading "tsflags" plugin
Loading "changelog" plugin
Loading "dellsysidplugin" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Could not find update match for openssl
No Packages marked for Update/Obsoletion

PS We encountered similar problems trying to install openldap-devel package.
