I have seen this problem with Intel cards.  Maybe this will give you
an idea.  If your xorg.conf does not give enough information about
memory, then X doesn't know how much memory there is, and so you get
the smaller resolultion.  On some Intel cards--I don't know about
yours--the memory is shared with the motherboard's main memory.  ON a
system like that , it is especially important to find out how to
declare how much memory you want to have for video.

I know this seems like detail crap that users should not have to mess
around with.  But it seems to be an everpresent fact of life.
