Wouldn't using something like:

   yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=sl-contrib makecache

normally be sufficient to get it to check for new content in sl-contrib?

[ the --disablerepo='*' is just to avoid it checking other repos but one 
probably wouldn't normally bother... ]
