I left the partitions as they were (I repeat the listing below), to be
mounted as they had been mounted before.

These were to be formatted
        /dev/sda3       /
        /dev/sda1       /boot
        /dev/sda7       /tmp
        /dev/sda5       /usr
        /dev/sda8       /var
