I would like to debug this problem. Could you please send me the output of:

# cat /proc/cmdline
# /sbin/lsmod
# cat /etc/modprobe.conf
# cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

when Scientific Linux is running on your Dell Optiplex 740.
