Hi,
thank you very much, I did that and it works.
Googling around I also discover that I got the pointer
back if I suppress the "rhgb" option in grub.conf.

You mean /usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig I think.
P.S. On that machine (Dell Optiplex 740) I could not run
your liveCD or liveDVD (4.5 , 5.0 and 5.1)
After "creating /dev/entries" I got the message:
fatal error occured - Data for LiveCD not found.
Are you using SCSI ?
