kernel upgrade problem in SL-5.0

The kernel upgrade from the original *18* to *53* kernel causes boot
failure in my ACER aspire 4520 laptop (64-bit AMD).
It is due to the hard disk driver change. Can any option be passed to
the upgraded kernel ?
I have both kernels installed now.
all_generic_hda does not work.
