I did a base install of SL5 and found it was somewhat of a challenge
to build the programs I wanted in their newest version. For the time
being, I'm concentrating on the x86_64 platform, and then if I decide
to stay with SL on all systems, I'll have i386 available. I don't
have this setup as a yum repository because my host, Dreamhost.com, is
a Debian shop, and they don't have the rpm repository tools installed.
I was aiming to have working & current versions of
lyx
gnumeric
unison
nvidia (proprietary drivers)
swarm
A surprisingly large number of prerequisite packages was needed to
build these things. A few I found in the EPEL repository, the others I
had to build by hand.
Soon I will have some statistical modeling packages, including "gretl"
"ggobi" and "JAGS" and a game theory analysis program called "gambit".
If you want to use these RPMS, great. You can do me a favor. Pick
one you want, such as unison. Try to install it. The install will
fail, and tell you other packages are needed. I should have all the
needed packages on my site, except for the ones that are in the yum
repositories. I did install some RPMS from the EPEL repository, but
as far as I recall, those were needed for building, not installing
these RPMS. If the required packages are not available to you, email
me. I need to know, so I can put those RPMS up on my collection as
well. If this ends up working, I will gladly contribute these to the
SL contrib section, (as soon as I learn how that works).
As an aside, I think the SL distribution should include the repo for
EPEL, since it is as close as we can get to an official endorsed
source for RedHat/Fedora Extras.
