Although it was no small miracle when it happened, a driver for the PERC5 
was added to TUVEL3 last year, in time for the hardware release. I don't 
remember the exact update, but this controller works quite well with SL 3.0.8.

But I agree that using SL5 or at least SL4 would be much better, if it's 
possible.
