The code works without errors and as intended when sourced. See the error 
message.

> # which vi
> /bin/vi

The alias was set in your subshell - only. If the return was a bug, the 
result would actually be vi=vim for all accounts, including the low UIDs.

The root user should really be able to type the m if vim's desired.
