Then you need to boot off of the boot.iso that is in 
/mydir/SL5/x86_64/images/boot.iso and not the cd1 or dvd.

The images that are on the DVD are not the same as the images that are in 
our ftp tree.

Yes.  The method for making the dvd and cd images in SL 5 has changed.
