snd-azx ? (intel HDA Audio / Azalia ) - actually we were looking for
that fix too: but for us it does not work on HP DC 7600 ..

BTW: We deployed the 55 kernel on "desktops" at CERN
two weeks ago: so far , so good.. no complaints from
users..
