We're running a couple of those and the corresponding 1950 (which makes no
difference from the OS's perspective) for a variety of purposes including
fileserving. All are equipped with the PERC5/i controller and SAS or -
more recently - also SATA disks.
These systems work well with SL308, SL44, and EL5beta2, no need for extra
drivers etc. I'd purchase more of these systems without hesitation.
I heard about occasional problems with 1950s with the default SAS5
controller and SATA drives under SL3. There's a RHEL3 driver update for
this controller available from Dell, but that's all I know.
Scanning the last few months' archives of the linux-poweredge mailing list
(see linux.dell.com) may give an idea of how linux folks generally get
along with the hardware.
The 5130 is our current CPU of choice for fileservers as well.
Performance may be better (and should never be worse) with 4x512MB instead
of 2x1GB.
Hope this helps,
Stephan
