Dual Xeon Quad core installation problem

Hi
I have a Dual Xeon E5345 quad core system with 8GB RAM (Intel Server Board S5000VSA) and 3 SATA 250GB drives. I 
installed SL 4.4 i386 with no problems but when I installed SL 4.4 x86_64 I get a kernel panic at first-boot just after 
the grub menu finishes. The message was
Cannot allocate resource region 0 of Device 0 0000:00:08.0
Then after about a screen of other error messages the system stops with a Kernel Panic.
I am at a loss about how to proceed to investigate the problem.
