I had this kind of problem years ago with Fedora Core 1 - it was
due to the system expecting the wrong kind of keyboard and mouse
(it seemed to pick up a different set of drivers partway through).
So what works for one part of the install may fail later on.

I've only used SL4.4 with laptop builtins, and also with a PS/2
keyboard and mouse on a desktop mobo, no server boards or USB
peripherals. Myself, I would diddle the settings in the BIOS,
and see if there is anything there that affects how SL4.4
interprets the peripherals. I would also try a different
keyboard and mouse, just for grins. It /shouldn't/ matter,
but unfortunately it sometimes does.
