Hi Keith,
Upgrading from SL4.x to SL5.x really isn't supported yet, so I'm nor too 
surprised about that nor working.

But, on the plus note.
I have a Dell Latitude laptop (sorry I forget the model number, it's not 
with me) where I had to do the same thing on S.L. 4.x (put in acpi=off 
in the grub line)
I installed SL5 alpha on a different partition, and it does indeed work 
better.  I haven't yet tried all the acpi stuff, except for one.  On SL 
4.4 if I hit the power button, the machine turned off instantly.  On SL5 
alpha if I hit the power button, it does a controlled shutdown.

I'll try some other acpi tests tonight and let you know.  But for now, I 
really suggest installing SL5 on a different partition just to test it out.
