I'm running 15 SL4.4 servers, and this happened on about half of them. It
seems the ones using only the base packages of SL4.4 are not affected, but the
ones running some packages from 3rd party repo's exhibited this problem.

I agree. The ones that had this problem I'm migrating to newer servers anyway,
so they'll end up being rebuilt at some stage this year.
