better late than never...

kernel-module-ipw3945-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp-1.1.0-test.1.SL4.i686.rpm
is working very nicely on my new Lenovo X60p connected to APs with WEP

caveats: run ipw3945d and don't soft reboot.  (geesch.)
