I downloaded SL 4.4 Live-CD and it did the job. /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 was available and
not mounted. So I did both:
e2fsck -c -c -C -y /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 (/)
e2fsck -c -c -C -y /dev/hdc1 (/boot)
and performed safe read/write surface scans for bad blocks, in both cases successfully.
