yum update: not found, program aborts

Hi,

I've installed Scientific Linux v4.2, x86_64, on an Athlon64 x2  
machine.  Aside from having to specify the loading of  sata drivers,  
the install was painless.

Updating the system with yum however seems confusing.  In particular,  
when I run,

rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/4x/i386/misc/ 
RPMS/yum-conf-4x.SL.noarch.rpm (ok)

yum update yum (ok)

yum update (fails)

the normal output follows this commad, with the addition at the end:

Why am I getting missing dependancy errors?  I havn't added a yum  
repository - which one should I select?  Is a repository specified  
automatically by the installer?
