On enigmail page, it is mentioned:

"GnuPG ? 1.4.5, see our step-by-step GnuPG setup guide for Windows; PGP is not supported."



On my SL 4.3 machine, GnuPG is version "gpg (GnuPG) 1.2.6". So I do not think it will work 
  out of the box, but it may work if you install a newer version of GnuPG by yourself.
