I have been using enigmail (an extension to thunderbird) and can
recommend it highly for interfacing gpg for signing and encrypting as
well as verifying signatures. It makes all this very easy. The recent
update of thunderbird appears to break any possible use of this
extension. I'm not sure I know why, but by deinstalling thunderbird and
installing a virgin copy from mozilla.com the problem has been solved.
I gather from various news groups that the build of thunderbird may be
significant in this regard (although the claim is that a conflict should
be detected if there is one and it seems not to be at install time).
The symptom I have observed on two systems (one SL 3.05 i386 and one SL
4.2 X86_64) is that when invoked enigmail complains that the enigmime
service is not available.

The workaround of using (and getting support for updates directly from)
the mozilla.com version is probably okay, but if this could be addressed
more directly in the distribution (different build, making a companion
enigmail build available) it might help others.
