it was a while back when I looked, but I think the ipw3945 si allmost 
the same as ipw2200,
and so the same software (firmware, drivers) can be used.
it is possible that the RPMs from atrpms.net would work OK.
just go to the RHEL4 section and get the ipw2200-testing and ieee80211 
stuff.
it worked the last time I used it.
