Is your /etc/grub.conf still a link to /boot/grub/grub.conf ?
(or a separate /etc/ file was created by some script/editor ...
which seems to be common error ...)

I assume that you've edited grub.conf yourself since
(at least 3.1-3 version) SL_enable_serialconsole does
not remove grub.conf entries upon de-installation ...

Cheers

Jarek

PS: console=tty0 shall not cause any problems
for your serial-connected UPS (this is the default
console: first screen on first adapter), but please
also check /etc/inittab entries for occurences
     of ttyS0 there ..
