I am extremely confused about the following problem:
On my dual opteron 240 system (MSI k8D master-F, slightly older MB,
3GByte ECC) I can run any application I want, but if I run an i386
application (openoffice, firefox i386, realplayer, ...) quite regularly
the system hard-locks (doesn't react to keyboard or network, but
generates no kernel oops). Independent of that I see very regular
crashes of such i386 programs, especially openoffice ("signal trampoline
not recognised" as well as traceback through bug-buddy that suggest
memory issues.)
The software its running is scientific linux 4.2 x86_64, with all
updates, and quite a few additional packages.
I trawled the net but kind find anything relevant--what can cause only
such applications to fail? This can't just be a simple memory problem,
because other highly memory intensive programs run fine (e.g.m x86_64
firefox..).
Any suggestions welcome,
Niels
