One easy solution would be to just buy a new NIC. I've had great luck
with cheap RTL8139 cards -- they supposedly don't do well under high
load conditions (a server that keeps its link saturated most of the
time), but they seem to work well for everyday desktop/workstation use.
Plus, the 100mbit cards are less than $12 from a local mom&pop computer
shop.

I always hate so solve a software problem in hardware, but I usually
don't have time to hack with the few drivers that don't work right. I
do the same thing when I run hardware that refuses to work with drivers
in Windows or Macintosh - my users have work to do!

Linux isn't perfect. It is is ideal for the work that I do, and I
rarely use other systems when I'm off-the-clock -- but it's not perfect.
